Making your Spring Garden Beautiful will Help Sell Your Home!
We’ve discussed the importance of a tidy garden in the past but at this time of year there is a real opportunity to set the scene for the coming months. Be sure not to neglect this important component of the selling strategy.
In this latest ‘FREE Expert Advice’ blog entry our favourite Professional Gardener, Mary Gilchrist who runs Reviving and Rejuvenating Gardens alongside business partner Sophie Martin, offers her take on where to invest your time this spring.
“At this time of year mother nature is blessing us with fleeting moments of promise; a few gorgeous sunny days, cherry trees blossoming, some early perennials burgeoning forth fresh growth.
If that’s enough to drive you out into your garden then here are some ideas for presenting your garden in the best possible light.
A quick pick up of fallen leaves and debris left by all that torrential rain and strong winds. As always continue to sweep your paths, they may have become slippery over the winter months, if so then use a power washer to blast them clean, or use specially formulated patio cleaner with a broom and some elbow grease. Clean paths really are worth the hard work as they set off your property beautifully.
If you haven’t cut back your perennial plants and grasses already, then set about getting the old dead growth cut right back, either right to the ground or to where the new growth is showing This allows new growth to come through and makes your plants look fresh and cared for. Any annual pants can be pulled out, they won’t come back again and should have shed their seeds for new seedlings and this year’s display.
I’m not going to recommend any drastic treatment for your lawn such as moss killing, this can leave your lawn looking black and very unattractive for a few weeks. If like mine your lawn has been like a marsh over the winter it’s going to need some love. I’m going to be feeding mine soon with a general lawn feed and fertilizer. Follow the manufacturers recommended application, a good tip is to measure out 1 meter squared with canes and string, sprinkle on the recommended dose for given area, this will give you a visual grasp of how much of the powder or pellets is needed for that space. Apply to the rest of the lawn, sit back and watch it flourish! ( rain required, shouldn’t be a problem)
Once you have cleaned, swept and tidied and fed, you may find a few gaps in your borders which are crying out for bright and pretty early flowering plants. Here are some suggestions for inexpensive additions to add some appeal:
Remember my cheat from the last blog, buy ‘already grown in pots’ daffodils, tulips, tete-a-tete narcissi. Dig a hole and sink the whole pot into the ground, cover the pot to hide it, surround with spring flowering pansies, primulas and violas. Winter flowering heathers can look lovely with snow drops or polyanthus dotted around it. Other plants in bloom at the moment that offer particular charm include Pulmonaria and the pretty little Wood Anemone.
And finally, revive your containers by topping them up with fresh compost, this will make them look fresh and benefit the plants to boot!â€
Happy gardening
